This simulation-based course is designed to provide Obstetrics and Gynecology residents with the essential knowledge and practical skills required to safely perform common minor obstetric and gynecological surgical procedures. The program combines concise evidence-based lectures with interactive hands-on workshops using simulation models to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and clinical practice.
Participants will receive training in perioperative patient preparation, surgical asepsis, prevention of surgical site infections, and fundamental surgical principles, followed by supervised practice of procedures including manual removal of retained placenta, dilatation and curettage (D&C), evacuation of vulvovaginal hematoma, episiotomy and repair, obstetric anal sphincter injury (OASIS) repair, cervical cerclage, and the management of Bartholin gland abscesses. Emphasis will be placed on proper surgical technique, tissue handling, hemostasis, complication prevention, and postoperative care to enhance patient safety, technical competence, and surgical confidence.
( 2 DAYS )
Describe the indications, perioperative preparation, relevant anatomy, and key surgical principles of common minor obstetric and gynecological procedures with at least 80% accuracy on the post-course assessment.
Demonstrate appropriate aseptic techniques and evidence-based measures for the prevention of surgical site infections during simulated procedures, achieving satisfactory performance on a standardized skills checklist.
Perform the essential steps of common minor procedures—including manual removal of retained placenta, dilatation and curettage (D&C), episiotomy and OASIS repair, cervical cerclage, vulvovaginal hematoma evacuation, and Bartholin abscess management—on simulation models according to standardized procedural checklists.
Recognize common intraoperative complications associated with these procedures and describe appropriate strategies for their prevention and management.
Demonstrate improved technical competence and confidence in performing common minor obstetric and gynecological procedures in a simulated environment, as assessed by faculty observation and structured skills evaluation.
