Online CME hours for SCFHS
Healthcare technology has significantly advanced in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in recent years, with several initiatives and programs aimed at developing healthcare using technology, in addition to many significant investments in research and development in healthcare that align with the Kingdom's Vision 2030. In this article, we will discuss some examples of the importance of technology in the development of healthcare services and the main challenges facing the use of healthcare technology. Technology is considered one of the effective factors in the development of healthcare services worldwide, as it has enabled the improvement of healthcare service quality, reduced the burden on healthcare practitioners, and enabled patients to access healthcare faster and more efficiently. The most significant contributions of technology to the healthcare sector are: 1- Facilitating access to healthcare services: Technology works to facilitate access to healthcare services, as patients can connect with doctors through the internet or healthcare applications. This helps to save time and effort in obtaining healthcare services, and reduces congestion in hospitals. 2- Improving medical file management: Technology has enabled the improvement of medical file management, where doctors can easily and quickly access patient files through the internet. This helps to improve the quality of healthcare, and reduces medical errors. 3- Improving communication between doctors and patients: Technology works to improve communication between doctors and patients, where doctors can easily send patient reports and medical prescriptions to their smartphones or tablets. This helps to improve the quality of healthcare and reduce the time required to prepare medical reports. 4- Improving medical monitoring: Technology has enabled the improvement of medical monitoring, where patients can use advanced medical devices to monitor their health conditions and vital signs in chronic diseases such as high blood pressure and diabetes, and send the data to doctors continuously. This helps to improve the quality of healthcare and identify diseases early. 5- Improving medical robots: Medical robots are considered one of the most advanced and modern technologies in healthcare services, where robots can analyse medical data and provide primary care to patients. This helps to improve the quality of healthcare and reduce the burden on healthcare practitioners. The main challenges facing the use of technology in healthcare: Despite the fact that technology is a contributing factor in the development of healthcare services worldwide, it faces some challenges and difficulties in its application in the field of healthcare. Some of the most prominent challenges are: 1- Lack of adequate funding: Technology is considered a costly factor that requires significant investment in devices, software, and infrastructure, and the lack of adequate funding is one of the main challenges facing the use of technology in healthcare. The effective application of technology in healthcare requires significant efforts from companies and investors to provide sufficient funding. 2- Concerns about privacy: Concerns about privacy and security are one of the main challenges facing the use of technology in healthcare, as the use of technology requires the storage of large amounts of sensitive medical data for patients. Healthcare organizations, governments, and companies responsible for developing technology in the healthcare field must ensure the protection of patients' personal data and implement necessary security measures to protect this information. 3- Doctors' inability to use technology: Technology in healthcare faces another challenge, which is doctors' inability to use technology effectively due to a lack of training and experience in using modern technology. Doctors need continuous training and updating on the latest technologies to enable them to use them effectively in the healthcare field. 4- Lack of necessary infrastructure: The lack of necessary infrastructure to effectively apply technology is one of the main challenges facing some countries or regions. The technology in healthcare requires some basic infrastructure, such as fast internet networks and advanced devices, and this requires significant efforts from governments and companies to provide this infrastructure. 5- Lack of interaction between patients and technology: Some patients have difficulty using technology and understanding how to use it. Patients need training and awareness on how to use technology in healthcare and its benefits. 6- Legal challenges: Healthcare regulations and laws vary from one country to another. Therefore, companies and organizations responsible for developing technology in the healthcare field must comply with local and international healthcare regulations and laws to apply technology legally and effectively. In conclusion, the future of healthcare using technology is considered a bright future, where technology can contribute to improving the quality of healthcare, reducing costs, and saving time and effort for doctors and patients. Therefore, it is necessary to enhance the partnership between healthcare and technology institutions, develop appropriate policies and procedures to improve the use of technology in healthcare, provide the necessary resources to apply technology in healthcare and improve access to it, and raise awareness among patients and the community about the benefits of technology in healthcare and the importance of protecting privacy and electronic security to overcome current challenges and use technology optimally.
